TEMPLE OWL TONY THURMOND COULD BE THE FIRST BLACK GOVERNOR IN CALIFORNIA

Tony Thurmond, CLA ’93, California state superintendent of public instruction, is on a mission to achieve something that has not been done in California’s history: become the state’s first Black and Afro-Latino governor.

Thurmond was recently in the Northeast as he visited Washington, D.C., to attend a conference focused on expanding funding that will help homeless students in the country. Before heading back west, he took a quick detour, stopping to visit his alma mater, Temple University, where he met with President Richard M. Englert.

TONY THURMOND SEEKS TO BUILD MILLIONS OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING UNITS FOR TEACHERS

California State Superintendent Tony Thurmond has unveiled a plan to build up to 2.3 million units of housing for teachers on surplus land owned by school districts across the state. His goal is to address the teacher shortage and the affordable housing shortage by offering reasonably priced units to educators and staff who cannot afford to live where they work, Thurmond explained at a press conference on Tuesday, July 30.

Thurmond is calling for the investigation into a video by Sheriff Bianco who is calling to put a “felon in the White House” and endorsing Donald Trump. The video was made in his sheriff’s uniform while also being critical of the governor, state officials and laws supporting criminals versus the victims.
