Sacramento – AB 55, by Assemblymember Tony Thurmond (D-Richmond) improves safety for oil refinery workers, and surrounding community members. The bill was signed by the Governor today.

“The passage of this bill sends a strong message that we want the most skilled and qualified workers in California refineries,” said Thurmond. “This bill is a win-win for refinery workers and communities that are in the shadows of refineries.”

Following the 2012 Chevron refinery explosion in Richmond, California the Legislature took swift action, passing SB 54 (Hancock). That bill required refineries to use a skilled and trained workforce in their day-to-day operations for refinery contracts awarded starting January 1, 2014. AB 55 closes loopholes in exemptions to SB 54 improving safety in California refineries and surrounding communities.

The California Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, California State Association of Electrical Workers, California State Pipe Trades Council, District Council 16, Painters and Allied Trades, International Brotherhood of Boilermakers and the, Western States Council of Sheet Metal Workers are in support of this bill. The State Building and Construction Trades Council of California was the bill’s sponsor.
