San Diego Lawmakers and Educators Endorse Tony Thurmond for Superintendent of Public Instruction

Press Release

San Diego, Calif. -- WEDNESDAY, August 15, 2018 -- Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins, State Senator Ben Hueso, Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher, the San Diego Educators Association, AFT Local 1931, UC-AFT San Diego, and the San Diego Building Trades Council have all endorsed Tony Thurmond for Superintendent of Public Instruction.

“I endorse Tony Thurmond for State Superintendent because Tony has provided real results to help California’s students,” said President Pro Tem Atikins.  “When I appointed him to chair committees that work with the most vulnerable kids in the state, he delivered hundreds of millions of dollars to help at-risk children and children with disabilities.  He also led our effort that guarantees a college scholarship to every California foster youth.”

"Tony Thurmond has a distinguished career serving at-risk children,” said Asm. Gonzalez Fletcher.  “Having served with Tony in the state legislature, I've seen him fight and win millions of dollars in the state budget for after school programs in S.T.E.M. and career technical education to prepare our neediest students for college and careers.  As a mother of school-aged children, I'm endorsing Tony for Superintendent of Instruction because I know firsthand the passion, energy and creativity he will bring to our schools in San Diego and across California."

Last year Thurmond, who is chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Education, hosted a town hall in partnership with San Diego Unified School District to share strategies for preparing students for jobs in tech fields.

If elected, Thurmond would be the first Latino and Afro-Latino to serve in the position of Superintendent of Public Instruction.  Thurmond’s mother immigrated from Panama and worked as a teacher in the San Jose area.

Thurmond is also endorsed by Senator Kamala Harris, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Equality California, the California Labor Federation, and the California Democratic Party.
