Part-time Education Benefits Bill Heads to Governor

Sacramento, CA – AB 670 authored, by Assemblymember Tony Thurmond (D-Richmond) provides benefits to part-time playground employees who are currently excluded from benefits and worker protections of classified employees. AB 670 passed the Senate today and is now heading to the Governor’s desk for final approval.

“I am thrilled that my legislative colleagues and I are on the same page regarding part-time playground employees receiving worker benefits and protections,” said Thurmond. “Part-time playground employees deserve the same protection and benefits as classified employees. Part-time playground employees do similar work as classified employees therefore they deserve similar benefits.”

Under current law, part-time playground positions are specifically excluded from classified service. Employees who work in these positions are referred to by varying titles, such as noon duty aides, yard aides, noontime assistants and playground aides. Part-time playground employees are predominantly women who often work five days a week for two or three hours, and are often the lowest wage earners on campus.

AB 670 ensures fairness and equity in rights, benefits and protections for school employees working in part-time playground positions.

AB 670 is sponsored by California School Employees Association (AFL-CIO), and supported by the California Federation of Teachers (AFl-CIO), California Labor Federation, and Laborers' International Union of North America (Local 777).
