Delaine Eastin Endorses Tony Thurmond for State Schools Chief

Press Release

Davis, CA – WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 29 – Former gubernatorial candidate Delaine Eastin has endorsed Assemblymember Tony Thurmond for the office she held from 1994-2002 – the State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

“I endorse Tony Thurmond for State Superintendent of Public Instruction (SPI) because I believe he will be a voice for all children,” said Eastin. “We are at a critical moment in California where we have dropped from the top ten of the 50 states to the bottom 10 in per pupil spending, adjusted for the cost of living, with the some of the largest class sizes and the fewest counselors, nurses and librarians per student in the nation. Tony understands that there is no magic bullet to transform our lowest performing schools.  They need additional resources, dedicated teachers and staff, engaged parents and a vision of 21st century learning that will go beyond snake oil solutions.”

Eastin continued:

“I want an SPI who will fight for each and every child and for a brilliant future for California in an increasingly competitive global economy. Tony Thurmond will be that SPI."

Thurmond has called for increases in state education funding to make California’s public schools #1 in the nation in per pupil spending.  As chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Education, Thurmond has fought for hundreds of millions for expanded STEM education and this year helped to secure an additional $150 million for career technical education programs.

Thurmond is endorsed by Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, former Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell and 21 county superintendents of schools, in addition to Senator Kamala Harris, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, the California Democratic Party, California Teachers Association, California Federation of Teachers,

Los Angeles Times and Sacramento Bee.
