Sacramento - Assemblymember Thurmond (D-Richmond) congratulates the California Youth Connection (CYC) for 30 years of advocacy efforts that have positively impacted the lives of children in the foster care system.

CYC is a youth-led organization that was founded in 1988 for children in foster care. CYC uses the legislative process as a tool to advocate for the needs of kids in foster care.

Thurmond’s 20-plus-year career as a social worker, and his experience as a youth in kinship care, has forever shaped his professional approach towards helping children.

“I commend CYC for 30 years of service and for being the voice of equity for children in the foster care system,” Thurmond said. “These leaders deserve to be recognized for making a profound impact in the lives of many within the foster care system.”

Previously, Thurmond authored a bill, which for the first time fully funded the California Chafee Grant Program for Foster Youth, ensuring that every eligible foster youth receives a college scholarship.

Last year, Thurmond led the effort to obtain $31 million annually for child care vouchers and related services, making sure that foster families have the child care they need to be able to successfully take children into their home.

This year, Thurmond will introduce legislation that will further support children in the foster care system.
