Attorney General Kamala D. Harris Endorses
Assemblymember Tony Thurmond
Says Thurmond “is making it possible for thousands of kids to have a bright future.”
Assemblymember Tony Thurmond (District 15) announced the endorsement today of California Attorney General Kamala D. Harris. Separately, Thurmond announced that he has completed all steps necessary to appear on the ballot for the June 7 primary election.
“I am proud to endorse Tony Thurmond for a second term in the California Assembly,” said Harris. “Tony is a champion for California’s children and an invaluable partner in our efforts to reduce chronic absenteeism in schools. He is making it possible for thousands of kids to have a bright future.”
“I am honored by the endorsement of Attorney General Kamala D. Harris and grateful to her for always fighting to give our kids a better chance to grow and thrive as adults,” said Thurmond. “Among her many, many other efforts, Attorney General Harris has made reducing elementary school truancy and chronic absence a priority since her time as San Francisco’s District Attorney – and she has been a tremendous help to me in making real progress for California’s children.”
Like Harris, Thurmond has a long history working to improve school attendance, reduce dropout rates and reduce violence in an around schools. As a nonprofit leader, Thurmond started CEO Youth, a project that helped keep disadvantaged kids in school and provided training in entrepreneurship. As a former West Contra Costa County School Board member, Thurmond led a plan to reduce school suspensions by 27% and worked closely with teachers to improve enrichment and school safety.
Thurmond is running for a second term in the California Assembly representing the East Bay’s 15th district. “Our campaign will ask voters in every corner of the district to join us in the fight to make the East Bay and all of California a better place for everyone,” said Thurmond.
Assemblymember Tony Thurmond represents the 15th Assembly District, comprised of the cities of Albany, Berkeley, El Cerrito, El Sobrante, Emeryville, Hercules, Kensington, Piedmont, Pinole, Richmond, San Pablo, Tara Hills and a portion of Oakland.
