Ballot Statement for Tony Thurmond

West Contra Costa Unified School District deserves someone with a clear vision and the courage to be held accountable for student achievement.

My career as a youth mentor, foster care advocate, social worker, and non-profit director has laid the foundation for my passion to see a child thrive through education. I’ve managed after school and tutoring programs in 30 schools and have first-hand experience closing the achievement gap one student, one school at a time.

Serving as a Richmond City Councilman has taught me how to prioritize resources and make tough choices for the betterment of children and families.  My civic involvement includes membership on the WCCUSD Bond Oversight Committee, West Contra Costa Education Fund, Contra Costa Community College Foundation, and an advisor to the Richmond Youth Commission.  I hold dual masters degrees in Law and Social Work.  My wife and I have a daughter in kindergarten here.

My goals for improving student achievement include reducing the drop-out rate, closing the achievement gap and restoring civility and accountability to the dealings of the school board.  I’ll work with parents and teachers to develop a plan to increase student literacy and college going rates.

I’d be honored to serve you.  To learn more:  www.tonythurmond.com.  Thank you.
